Prataya Saha's technical expertise as a director is bolstered by an impressive performance by Anshulika Kapoor

By Amartya Acharya

One of the first things that aid The Good Wife in creating an impression is the opening sequence’s focusing on the feet. Prataya Saha as a director is very promising in point of visual storytelling. The woman walking with purpose, having trouble while walking, going to the local shoesmith to fix her slipper – the entire sequence of the titular good wife from the time of her journey to the shop back to her house, signifies a woman who knows her way around the world, and even if she doesn’t, she is experienced enough to navigate through it. But end of the day, the good determined wife is also a woman. She lusts and misses her husband, she wants to celebrate his arrival at the palatial, and yet empty. Her running from one end of the long corridor to another stopping the pressure cooker, her character changing the radio to an old-timey love song, the camera losing focus almost, as if to give her privacy, director Prataya Saha uses a myriad of technical tricks and knowledge up her arsenal to craft a narrative which feels at least visually different.

But the star of the show is obviously Anshulika Kapoor. Playing the good wife with an ironic bent, she manages to narrate as well as express her emotions of regret, happiness and wanting with alacrity. Even as the screenplay becomes loud and the narrative devolves to something far more predictable, Kapoor doesn’t lose a step. She is immensely watchable and one of the highlights of watching The Good Wife.

A much noticeable work in this short is the cinematography and the production design. The production does have a couple of mistakes which doesn’t fit with the timeline of the narrative, but the cinematography, color grading is where director Saha manages to hammer down the era in which the story is taking place.
