Filmmaking Through Your Smartphone Lenses
Are You A SMART-phone filmmaker??
BY TEAM CINESHORTS PREMIERE
Filmmaking is indeed a highly creative profession but at the same time it can even be a highly challenging one, if you do not have the right approach towards it.
More than a lac filmmakers are born each year in our country, having to set your foot requires some perseverance & patience. While many get lost in this journey, some stay focused & enjoy the whims & fancies the profession gets along.
There used to be a time which probably people during the 90's must have witnessed, that filmmaking could only be done if there's a producer backing your project without which you aspirations to become a filmmaker was on a stand still. But today we are living in the world of Independent Filmmaking. Has anyone thought why the name Independent Filmmaking? Coz you're now independent to plan your own films, no more producer chasing, no more awaiting for the project to get started, no more awaiting of the location permissions, no fancy equipment's, all you need is a small team of film enthusiasts ready to kick start & a SMARTPHONE.
A handheld device which today each one of us have an access to, a device that fits into your palms width & produces spectacular colors. While we don't suggest which type of smartphone shall work best since we believe each of the latest smart phone devices today can give you the quality you're looking for. All you need to do is just go to your >>Camera & select the Video option<< that simple.
You have a rocket in your pocket, your smart phone camera is the most user friendly camera ever invented. Hence if you can't make a decent movie with one of these, what chance do you have with something more complex?
In fact there are many films which have been purely been made on a smart phone, recent example being of the Malayalam film C U Soon streaming on Amazon Prime. The entire film has been shot using a smart phone & mind you not a short one but an entire feature length one! Being eager to start shooting something with whatever is in reach is a good sign you are thinking as a filmmaker.
Where do we start from??
Well, try thinking of some story you recently came across which interested you or maybe an experience you encountered or something that you feel is interesting enough to be conveyed visually. Don't think on writing or documenting the dialogues, just try creating a story with just 4-6 minutes in length. If you still do not have something interesting to convey or feel lost, just think of capturing a day in someone's life. It may be your Newspaper guy or the old aunty living in your neighborhood, a friend whose just returned from abroad or maybe try capturing a gathering with friends, don't force your brains to freak out on this simple exercise, just go & shoot something.
These are just top of mind ideas, I am sure you guys are capable of crafting far more interesting stories, all we say is just don't sit for work to happen, try creating one for yourself. Just one advice, try to keep the story simple, do not involve more characters, try filming with 2 or maximum three characters with this exercise.
To help you better your experience, we can probably suggest some easy to use filming gears for your smartphone without burning a whole in your pockets & to get that presentable look for your film.
